Wonton: The Elegant Dumpling That Tells a Thousand Stories

Introduction:

From humble street stalls in Guangzhou to fine dining restaurants across the world, wonton (馄饨) has earned its place as a culinary icon in Chinese cuisine. At Oriental Triangle Restaurant & Lounge, our take on this classic is both respectful of tradition and infused with fresh creativity.

 What Is a Wonton?

A wonton is a delicate Chinese dumpling made with a thin dough wrapper and a flavorful filling, typically consisting of ground meat (often pork or shrimp), aromatics, and seasonings. Unlike potstickers or gyoza, wontons are usually boiled and served in broth or deep-fried to a golden crisp.

Wontons literally mean “swallowing clouds” in Cantonese—aptly named because of how they look floating in soup!

 Types of Wontons We Serve

At Oriental Triangle, we prepare two popular styles of wontons:

  1. Wonton Soup
A comforting bowl of clear broth filled with silky wontons, garnished with scallions, bok choy, and a hint of sesame oil.

  2. Crispy Fried Wontons
Perfectly fried wontons filled with seasoned chicken or shrimp, served with a tangy sweet chili dip or soy-vinegar blend.

 A Bite of History

The wonton’s origin traces back to the Han Dynasty, where it was known as “húntún” – a word meaning “chaos” or “confusion.” It symbolized the mixing of meat and spices wrapped in a soft shell. Over centuries, regional variations blossomed:

  • Cantonese wontons: Small, delicate, shrimp-based.

  • Sichuan-style wontons: Served with chili oil and garlic paste (called Red Oil Wontons).

  • Shanghai wontons: Usually larger and milder in flavor.

 What Makes Our Wontons Special?

At Oriental Triangle, we pride ourselves on:

  • Handmade wrappers – rolled thin for perfect tenderness.

  • Premium fillings – a blend of juicy meat, fresh ginger, garlic, and house spices.

  • Flavor-packed broths & sauces – slow-simmered for hours to extract the best umami.

Our kitchen team combines time-honored Chinese recipes with contemporary techniques to give you an experience that is both nostalgic and exciting.
